Northern Lights on the Prairies East of Calgary

Aurora Borealis during a Solar Storm

Early in the day on Tuesday I saw an alert that the Aurora Borealis would be active that day, possibly reaching “Storm Levels”. But it was cloudy and raining in Calgary at the time so I didn’t think too much about it. I kept the idea in the back of my head about maybe going out for a late night drive if it did clear up. It didn’t look like it was going to happen until after midnight when all of a sudden the clouds around the city lifted. So I packed up my gear and headed east. I’m glad I did because it turned into an amazing light show!

The aurora got stronger and stronger the entire time I was out there and even as I was packing up to head for home (and my bed) it seemed that it would probably continue all night. What an incredible event to watch!
