Derksen Potter Engagement Sessions

I had a beautiful engagement session with Charity and Bruce (and their dog Lola) at the Ranche recently. They are such a beautiful couple and the Ranche is one of my favorite places for photography. The place has so much going on that there ends up being a really wide variety of stuff to use as a backdrop for portraits. My two favorites are the walls of the red barn and the long grasses in the nearby fields. Charity and Bruce were both great sports and they were willing to try anything I asked for, which always makes my job easier! It was great to be able to spend a few minutes with the couple in a more relaxed setting before their upcoming wedding. Even though this event will be relatively small, weddings are always pressure packed and it's much nicer to get to know each other in a different atmosphere before the wedding. Thanks to Charity and Bruce for including me in their big day! I'm really looking forward to it!

Family Portraits at The Ranche

I had a fantastic family portrait session at The Ranche in Fish Creek Park with the Graham family. We had a beautiful day out and there were lots of laughs by everyone in the group! We wandered around the park and found lots of fun spots to use. Everyone had a great attitude and they were all very helpful and willing to try anything. The Ranche is a very popular destination for Calgary Portrait Photographers because of the wide variety of places to shoot. We made use of the gardens and pathways, an old bridge, a park bench, and I even convinced the family to sit in the long grasses in the field. I knew that the glowing green grass would provide a wonderful background in the bright sunlight and I was excited when they agreed to do it! I think the images speak for themselves, but I'd love to hear your thoughts?? The summer portrait season is in full swing and I still have a few openings at the end of August. Call soon to book.... The fall portrait season is coming to Calgary sooner than we'd like to imagine!

Finding David | Bellewether Album Release Party

Readers of my blog may remember that I did a creative photo session with Calgary based Indie Pop and Rock band Bellewether a few months ago... Well the images have finally been put to use! There are photos of the band on their website, Facebook, and MySpace pages, and they also used one of the creative portraits on the cover of the album. I was excited to learn that they basically used the image as-is, without making any major changes to it after I provided it to them! The Album Release Party is this Saturday night: Date: Saturday August 6, 2011 (Doors open at 07:00) Location: Quality Hotel Airport, 4804 Edmonton Trail N.E., Calgary, AB, T2E 3V8 You can buy tickets in advance at the Bellewether website, or try to get lucky and get them at the door on Saturday. You can see more of the images from my portrait session with the band at the following article: Bellewether Album Cover Shoot

Steven Owad | Author Headshots

I had the pleasure of creating headshots for Steven Owad recently. Steven is a local crime novelist who has 2 published books to his credit. He is currently working on another book (Hard Currency, coming in June of 2012) and he needed some new portraits for use on his website and marketing materials. The image(s) will also be used for the cover of the new book. We had a fun creative portrait session and made lots of great images for Steve to choose from. Some of them were done on a white backdrop to make them easier to "cut out" from the background. You can see these images in use on Steven's updated website... Here are a few of my favorites:

PDawgs Portrait Session

Lori-Ann is the owner of Pawsitive Dawgs Training & Pet Services and she needed some updated images of her dog Murphy for use on her website and in her marketing materials. She has a beautiful old car that has been perfectly restored and decorated with her logo on the windows. She wanted to include the car in some of the images with Murphy in or on the car, and with the Calgary skyline in the background. I suggested that we met at Rotary Park (in Northeast Calgary) because it has easy access to some great views of the city and also a beautiful green space that we could use for the portraits. It was a beautiful day and we got some great photos! About PDawgs: Pawsitive Dawgs will challenge your thinking and what you’ve learned about dog training in the past. We offer a 'no fluff, no nonsense' training method that will help you create a true bond of mutual trust and respect between you and your dog, all without using treats or other masking tools such as prong or choke collars. We may just have a little fun along the way too! Read More...
